Hand Carved Jacaranda Wood Lion from Africa
Hand Carved Jacaranda Wood Lion from Africa
Africa is inhabited by many unique animals. One is a top predator, the LION! Did you know a group of Lions is called a coalition? there are usually only two in a coalition but they can be a large group. They work together for protection and power. WE could liken a coalition of Lions to a city gang controlling their turf.
The majority of the wood carving in Kenya is done by the Kamba people. Sitting at home or in workshops, the art is passed down from generation to generation. Using small hand made tools, each carver learns to specialize in their favorite carving types. Lions are one of the favorite, especially the make with his large flowing mane.
As each lion is carved by hand there are variations in the wood, and the carving style of the carver.
These lions are 4.5 to 6″ long X 3 – 3.5″ tall and 1.5 to 2.5″” thick. They are carved from Jacaranda wood and finished with a unique wiped stain method.
